So which of the numerous essential oils should we be aware of? According to this paper by Anthony Dweck, the following essential oils are phototoxic:
- Amni visnaga oil
- Angelica root oil
- Bergamot oil, expressed
- Cumin oil
- Fig leaf absolute
- Grapefruit oil
- Lemon oil, cold pressed
- Lime oil, expressed
- Mandarin oil, cold-pressed
- Opoponax oil, absolute, resinoid
- Orange oil bitter
- Parsley leaf oil
- Petitgrain Mandarin oil
- Rue oil
- Tagetes oil and absolute
- Tangerine oil, cold-pressed
- Verbena oil
Personally, I have a couple of products with grapefruit extracts in them and I am sure that the formulators have it all thought out. But as an added protection, I only use the product at night. I am also diligent with my sunscreen use, as well.
How about you? Care to share your experience with products containing phototoxic oils?
